Learning outcomes

Objectives of the course:

 Learning of basic terms (archaeology, archaeological sites, monuments, institutions).
 Importance of archaeological tourism in relation to other alternative forms of tourism.
 Seperation of archaeological sites & monuments by category.
 Connecting archaeological tourism with activities.
 Tour guide techniques.
 Profile & incentives of archeological tourists.
 Archaeological sites & monuments in Greece.
 UNESCO’s role in archaeological tourism.
 Countries considered as target groups for archaeological tourism in Greece & reasons.
 Potential contribution of archaological tourism in the regional development of Greece.

General Competences

 Adaptation to the new situations that are formed due to the shift of traditional forces of mass tourism, in addition to archaeological tourism.
 Development of critical skills for the ultimate utilization of an archaological site as a whole, at the level of local society.
 Decision making in the context of tourism planning & tourism policy.
 Production of new, modern ideas for the displaying of the cultural asset.

The course content includes:

• Historical review.
• Archaological tourism in ancient Greece.
• Archaeological sites & monuments in every Greek Region.
• UNESCO, ICOMOS, ICCROM etc.
• The role & meaning of tour guide.
• Differentiation of archaeological tourism as a tourist product.
• Comparative analysis with countries abroad.
• Greek case studies.
• Countries which can sustain archaological tourism in Greece.
• Connection of archaeological tourism with other alternative tourism forms.
